This fast-growing Norwegian company will be responsible for the INVADE coordination, analysis and design of business models and energy market structures.

Smart Innovation Norway (SIN) hosts NCE Smart Energy Markets, which is Norway’s leading cluster of industries and academic institutions within Smart Grid and Smart Energy Market Research and Innovation.

The company develops smart and sustainable solutions through research-based innovation and business development.

“Emphasis is on techno-economic models and analysis, artificial intelligence technologies and prosumer and user flexibility”, says Dieter Hirdes, Head of Research & Innovation at Smart Innovation Norway and project coordinator for INVADE.

Innovative and fast-growing

Since 2003, SIN has coordinated and participated in more than 25 research and innovation projects, including 9 EU projects, with a total budget of more than 135 million euros.

“During the last couple of years, SIN and the NCE cluster have grown from a local energy-trade initiative to a key national innovation player within Smart Energy, Smart Cities and Digitalization. In addition, SIN has become an international business-orientated research and innovation player, winning prestigious Horizon 2020-projects like EMPOWER, PERMIDES and, of course, INVADE”, says Hirdes.

Smart Innovation Norway is located at Remmen Innovation Center in Halden, Norway, where a talented team of researchers and innovators from 9 counties work rapidly on research and innovation tasks and projects related to smart cities and communities as well as incubation.

SIN’s role in INVADE

SIN has considerable experience within coordination of large research projects, which is why the company is in charge of the INVADE project coordination (WP1) and the overall technical coordination throughout the project.

The company is also responsible for the project exploitation (WP3), several communication tasks (within WP2) and the review of state-of-the-art of business models for the energy sector (within WP9).

“We have strong competences within electricity market design and functional specification for all kinds of energy market systems and exploitation prospects”, explains Hirdes. He adds:

“Being a non-profit research organization focusing on research based innovation and exploitation of results from such projects, helps us to maximize exploitation from INVADE. It will also help us achieve great impact on the development of the energy industry – for the benefit of the consumers and prosumers”.
