Presenting the partners: Estabanell Energia

By Mari Kristine Buckholm, Smart Innovation Norway 29. June 2017

Estabanell Energia will take the developments from the INVADE project and apply them in a large-scale pilot, from which further developments can be built.

Estabanell y Pahisa Energia, S.A. (EPESA) combines the roles of Distribution Systems Operator (DSO) and retailer in the electricity domain. As telecom operator, the company provides dark fibre, as well as fiber-to-the-home (FTTH), internet, fix telephony, mobile and TV channels to domestic, commercial and industrial customers, and Power Line Communications (PLC) based telecommunications.

EPESA is considered an SME (small and medium-sized enterprises) and has a network of over 1.100 kilometers from Camprodon to Granollers, servicing more than 56.000 power customers.

Electrical grid manager

One of the company’s key competencies is project management.

“We manage the grid at all three levels, high, medium and low voltage grid, including primary and secondary substations. We also develop, integrate, and apply telecommunication technologies, like Wimax, optical fiber and radio technologies, in the electrical grid”, says Santi Martínez Farrero, CEO of Estabanell Energia and project coordinator for INVADE.

In addition, he mentions smart grids, and integration of renewables and storage in the grid, as well as addressing legal business and integration challenges of new technologies in a real electrical grid, as important competencies.

“As a flexible SME, we are able to test state-of-the-art concepts and technologies in our own network”, explains Farrero.

EPESA’s role in INVADE

Estabanell Energia has several tasks in INVADE, including living lab and reinforcement of all activities related to demand response, definition of the technical requirements, relationship with the prosumers and the municipality, and connection of the deployed systems with the control room. EPESA is also responsible for the pilot implementation in Spain (task 10.7).

“Estabanell will conduct a large-scale pilot in its network. This will contribute to the project in several ways. Firstly, it will put the concepts and developments of the INVADE project to test in a practical situation. Secondly, it will explore emerging roles in the energy market, e.g. flexibility operator. And thirdly, it will explore how centralized storage can be managed, integrated, and shared”, states the CEO.

“Being involved in a project that in the future can become the real energy scenario, gives us utility knowledge and experience from early on”, he adds.
