This Finnish company is a multi-technological research organisation providing high-end technology solutions and innovation services.

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland is a non-profit government which combines different technologies and creates new innovations and a wide range of world-class technologies. The goal is to improve clients’ competitiveness and competence.

“VTT has an integrated approach to design electrochemical storage systems, primarily Lithium-ion batteries, in both mobile and stationary applications”, says Mikko Pihlatie, Research Team Leader at VTT.

Experimental investigations

Through the company’s international scientific and technology networks, VTT produces information, upgrades technology knowledge, and creates business intelligence and added value for its stakeholders.

“We work on experimental investigations of commercially available and prototype storage technologies on battery cells, modules and complete systems”, explains Pihlatie. He adds:

“Important aspects include large characterisations of cells for technology assessment and modelling purposes, battery management systems and safety, and battery lifetime. Combining modelling tools with use case requirements, gives the frame for system design and optimisation”.

VTT’s role in INVADE

The Research Team Leader reveals that VTT takes part in the INVADE project to supply the expertise needed on battery technology, battery performance, lifetime and diagnostics in grid-connected storage systems. Thus, VTT is responsible for the INVADE energy storage technologies (Work Package 6).

“We hope that the most important contributions from us to the project are in two areas. First, we hope to give good and valuable support to the storage pilots in their work to design and optimise their storage systems to give added value in their applications. Second, we want to be able to offer knowledge, methods or models related to storage technologies, supporting other partners”, says Pihlatie.

“Our contributions will be implemented and utilised in other parts of the project dealing with the power system and energy markets”, he notes.

In addition, VTT is involved in dissemination and communication activities and exploitation plan development.
