Presenting the partners: ElaadNL

By Mari Kristine Buckholm, Smart Innovation Norway 18. July 2017

ElaadNL coordinates the connections of public charging stations to the electricity grid on behalf of the Dutch DSOs.

Founded in 2009 and funded by the Dutch distribution grid operators (DSOs), ElaadNL is a non-profit knowledge and innovation centre in the field of (smart) charging infrastructure.

“ElaadNL works on the smooth integration of electric vehicles to the power grid by making full use of renewable energy. Through its many partnerships, ElaadNL provides the acquired knowledge about smart charging to the EV community across Europe”, says Onoph Caron, director of ElaadNL.

One of the ways ElaadNL does this, is by contributing heavily to standardisation of communication protocols and regulation politics of smart charging.

“An important step”

Since the beginning, the foundation has been working to adapt the grid connection demands to make these more equipped for charge points. Managing the existing charging stations is done by EVnetNL, in coordination with the relevant municipalities. This provides an innovative charging network, a living lab for ElaadNL.

INVADE will provide an infrastructure that allows for large-scale implementation of smart charging, which is why ElaadNL is a part of the consortium.

“We consider the INVADE project as an important step to ensure compatibility and interoperability with existing standardised processes and tools throughout Europe”, explains Caron.

ElaadNL’s role in INVADE

Together with GreenFlux, ElaadNL is responsible for the pilot in the Netherlands (task 10.4), one of the markets with the highest penetration of EVs worldwide.

“This pilot will explore the possibilities of matching demand to sustainable generation and using sustainable generation and storage to obtain more advanced local grid stability and quality balancing”, the director points out.

Onoph Caron, director of ElaadNLElaadNL will be responsible for charge points in the public domain, but will also carry out experiments in a semi-public/office environment. In this domain, the flexibility possibilities to be entered in the energy system are considered.

“We will connect to the integrated INVADE platform, supplying data for more advanced algorithms to further optimize the effects of the experiments. It is key that this is done in a standardised way. ElaadNL will demonstrate how existing smart energy solutions can be made interoperable with the integrated INVADE platform”, Caron stresses. He adds:

“In short, this pilot will help study the effect on the electricity grid load of charging with locally available energy resources, determine its financial value, and pave the way for the introduction of a viable and interoperable market”.

In addition to the Dutch pilot implementation, ElaadNL is responsible for standards and communication protocols (task 4.4) and local policy regulations implications (task 9.3).
